FAQ - Ganterud Balancing Suspension Device

Function Safety Operation & Maintenance Lifespan & Load Technical Specifications Support

Functionality of the Device

What is the leveling force?

The force that the chain wheel can exert. This force represents the maximum difference in weight between Side A and Side B that the load can handle.

Can I activate the fast mode during lifting?

NO! This mode is solely for quickly balancing chain lengths in an unloaded state.

What is the "unlock" function, and can the load shift if accidentally activated?

The unlock function sets the chain wheel to the "pulley" mode. This MUST always be activated before lifting to avoid unilateral overloading. If triggered under load, the gearbox resistance of about 5-10% of the leveling force prevents uncontrolled shifting. However, this function should not be used recklessly!

Can the chain be shortened?

Yes, this can be done by PHILIPP GmbH. A longer chain can also be installed. It is advisable to check before ordering whether a longer or shorter chain is appropriate.

Can I rest heavy objects while leveling to reduce the weight on the Ganterud?

NO! For all PRO devices: "Leveling only in the air!" Resting the load may disrupt its balance, causing higher forces and potentially overloading the motor.

What if I am unsure about the weight of the load I want to lift/level?

Contact PHILIPP GmbH for assistance in correctly determining your load. Using a crane scale on one of the chain sides is also a common solution.

What must I check before using the device?

Contact PHILIPP GmbH for assistance in correctly determining your load. Using a crane scale on one of the chain sides is also a common solution.

  • Read and understand the user manual
  • Visually inspect the device
  • Check battery status and activate the isolating switch
  • Test device functionality
  • Plan the lifting process / conduct a risk assessment

Safety

What safety features does the device provide? (Auto shut-off, weight display…)

The device does not have an overload shut-off or weight display. In case of doubt, consult PHILIPP GmbH or use a crane scale. All load-bearing components have a safety factor of 4:1 against breakage. The hook cannot retract since the device knows the chain length (zero position).

Can I use the Ganterud Balancing Device for single-strand lifting?

NO! Never use only one hook!

How do I charge the device?

Turn off the balancing device -> deactivate the isolating switch.

Operation & Maintenance

What does the "A" on the remote control mean?

DO NOT press it! It disconnects the remote control from the device and must be reconnected afterward – see user manual for details.

Where can I check the battery status?

Behind the maintenance flap on the device itself.

Maintenance status - color coding:

  • GREEN = >75%
  • YELLOW = >50%
  • RED = <25%

Lifespan & Load

How long does the battery last?

Depends on the load. For "normal usage," about a week. For demanding tasks (e.g., handling heavy staircases), 1-2 days.

Can the device be charged in rain/snow?

L3-L12: The maintenance flap can be closed during charging. L20: A cover is available for adverse weather conditions.

Who should inspect the device, and how?

A qualified service partner (PHILIPP GmbH in the DACH region) must inspect the device annually.

Technical Specifications

What is the range of the remote control?

Approximately 100 meters in an unobstructed line of sight.

Is the leveling force sufficient for my desired object?

Reference Example: A customer in Munich required handling 28-ton stairs with landings from a flatbed trailer (horizontal position) to a 65° angle. The maximum weight difference between both sides was approximately 4.5 tons. We managed this with two L20 units. If unsure, contact PHILIPP GmbH for advice!
